China will send protective gear to help the EU fight the coronavirus, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced today.
China’s Premier Li Keqiang has agreed to send two million surgical masks, 200,000 N95 face masks and 50,000 testing kits to the EU, she said in a recorded address. She added that they can be shipped to the EU immediately.
When China was first hit, the EU sent more than 50 tonnes of protective equipment to China, she noted. “Today, we are the center of the coronavirus pandemic, and we need protective equipment ourselves,” she said.
The EU is ramping up production and converting new production lines, but “this needs several weeks.”
“In the meantime, we are grateful for support from China,” she said.
China has already sent face masks, doctors and ventilators directly to countries like Italy and Belgium.
